Acceptable Use Policy
Short links only work if people can trust them. This Acceptable Use Policy (“AUP”) sets out what you may not do with URelf. It is part of our Terms of Service and applies to every link, account and API key. When we say “link” we mean both the short link and the destination it points to, including anything the destination later redirects to.
1. Prohibited content and uses
You may not create, share or maintain links that:
- Phishing and impersonation: try to trick people into revealing passwords, payment details or other personal information, or impersonate a person, brand, bank, government body or service, including look-alike short names.
- Malware: distribute viruses, ransomware, spyware, unwanted software, cryptominers, or exploit kits, or lead to drive-by downloads.
- Spam: are sent in unsolicited bulk messages (email, SMS, social media, comments or messaging apps), or promote services that do so.
- Illegal content: lead to content or activity that is illegal in the European Union or in Hungary, such as the sale of illegal goods, unlicensed gambling, fraud, scams, or material that infringes copyright, trademarks or other rights.
- Child sexual abuse material: any content that sexually exploits or endangers minors. We report this to the competent authorities and organisations without exception.
- Harassment and hate: threaten, harass, dox or incite violence or hatred against people or groups, or share intimate images without consent.
- Deceptive redirects: hide where a link really goes, for example by cloaking (showing different content to our checks than to visitors), chaining through other URL shorteners or open redirects, or swapping a harmless destination for a harmful one after the link has been shared.
- Evading filters: are used to get around spam filters, safety checks, platform rules or blocklists, including those of email providers and social networks.
2. Abuse of the Service
You also may not:
- create multiple accounts to get around plan limits or an enforcement action;
- use the API or automated tools to exceed rate limits, overload the Service, or enumerate other users’ links;
- probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the Service without our written permission (please report security issues to [email protected]);
- artificially inflate click counts or interfere with analytics;
- resell or white-label the Service without our written agreement.
3. How we enforce this policy
We check destinations automatically when links are created or edited and re-check them regularly, and we review reports from users, security researchers and authorities. If we believe a link or account breaks this policy, we may, depending on the severity:
- show visitors a warning page or disable the link (disabled links show an information page instead of redirecting);
- delete the link;
- revoke API keys, or suspend or permanently close the account;
- preserve relevant information and report illegal activity to law enforcement or other competent authorities.
For serious or clear-cut cases, such as phishing, malware or child sexual abuse material, we act immediately and without notice. Otherwise, we’ll usually contact you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. If you think we made a mistake, email [email protected] with the link and an explanation, and we’ll review it.
4. Reporting abuse
If you come across a URelf link that breaks this policy, please report it or email [email protected]. Include the short link and, if possible, why you think it’s harmful. You don’t need an account to report a link. Notices of illegal content under the EU Digital Services Act can be sent the same way; please include the information listed in Article 16 of the DSA.
